STEP 1 OF 3

1You need a hypothesis.

A hypothesis is an educated guess you can test with data. For example: "Trading unmitigated FVGs on the 5-minute after the New York open works when retested and held." Now you have something to verify.

Take the code of an indicator that already works, hand it to Claude, and tell it your hypothesis and that you need to backtest it. You're not stealing an indicator. You're the goldsmith; the indicator is just the ore.

2You need an asset.

Pick the asset you understand best. For us, that's Bitcoin. Claude can't fetch data or run backtests in chat, but it can write you a python file that pulls data straight from Binance for free. CME products like ES and NQ need databento, which is paid.

Then tell Claude to build you a backtester you can run on your own PC, and to give you the commands that run it.

STEP 3 OF 3

3Backtest it.

Your first run will probably print a 30–40% win rate. That's normal. You are the brain, not Claude. Feed it conditions: which hours, which sessions, which days. For COVENANT we assumed New York was the best session. It was London.

Claude will cry "overfitting". Sometimes the callout is valid. A lot of times it isn't. Think smartly and verify.
